The Gap is Too Wide (10:37)

Cover of The Spirit of Autumn Past

From The Spirit of Autumn Past and 4 other releases

“The Gap” is the closing song on Mostly Autumn’s second album The Spirit of Autumn Past. Written by Iain Jennings, the song is dedicated to the life of Iain’s mother, Susan Jennings.

The studio version features guest appearances from Troy Donockley on Uilleann pipes, and The Christchurch Singers on the choral closing section. Despite it being an established fan favourite, Mostly Autumn have seldom played the song live, but a rare live version appears on the live album At the Grand Opera House, also featuring The Christchurch Singers.

More recently, Iain Jennings’ band Breathing Space have regularly played a simplified version in their live set with Mellotron replacing the choir, although they have yet to release any live recordings of the song.
