San Francisco, United States (1983 – 1994, 2008 – present)

Formed in 1983, San Francisco’s Mordred was one of the first bands associated with the fusion style called . Originating in the metal scene, Mordred included vocalist Scott Holderby, guitarists Danny White and J. Taffer, bassist Art Liboon, and drummer Gannon Hall. With a precise style of riffing in the style of Bay Area stars such as Testament and Forbidden, the band distinguished themselves thanks to Liboon’s uncommonly upfront bass work and a tentative flirtation with funk - a style which had more in common with funk-rock bands like Faith No More.

In fact, their 1989 debut, Fools Game, contained a cover of Rick James’ funk classic “Superfreak,” featuring scratches courtesy of DJ Aaron (Pause) Vaughn. After replacing Taffer with guitarist James Sanguinetti and making Vaughn a full-time member, the band decided to embrace their funk interests for their next, and perhaps best work, 1991’s In This Life. They would record three more EPs and one final full length before disbanding in 1994.

As of 2008 the band has reformed and is planning to record a new demo.

I already knew that Funk Metal is a gem, but Thrash + Funk metal is so genius!

The Next Room is their best, on that album they've created their own sound (2) and opened my mind

This was a great band, a mate gave me a cassette of In This Life way back when I was in school, coming from Britain I've never met anyone else who heard of them, they reminded me a lot of Senser.

I think they created their own sound on In This Life and Vision. Sure, they were funky as RHCP and reminded somewhat of Faith No More, but none of those had thrash metal in the same way OR sounded like Mordred.

I love Mordred, but all i can say is watch out for the zombified version of the band that is doing the rounds at the moment. Its a few former members plus a vocalist that they had prior to recording Fools Game. For some utterly bizarre reason, they've dropped the all the unique flair that made Mordred stand out and adopted some embarrassing Pagan/viking theme... and they don't half butcher the classics. Lets get a reunion with Scott Holderby!

Without a doubt the most underrated band in the existence of music. I'm baffled over the lack of recognition.
