End of the Year - Top 50

I am writing this mainly as an archive so that I can compare my listening habits from this year to the next. This list is just a copy of my Top 50 artists based solely on scrobbles during the last 12 months.

When looking at this list, I see a few surprises & a lot of the expected. Not near as many "new" artists as I would like showing I need to branch out a bit more in my listening habits. I will talk about the surprising (to me) bands included as i list each one. However, there are a few artists that I just assumed would easily be in a Top 50 for me but are not. Top of that list are Missy Higgins, Hayes Carll, & The Randies. Will they return in 2010? I certainly hope so.

50. Jellyfish

New artist for me this year, introduced by a fellow last & blip fm'er. Thanks JLP.

49. Ken Block

Sister Hazel's lead singer from his terrific solo album.

48. Pete Droge

Too bad that Pete never really found (at least yet) an audience. Some wonderful songs in his catalog.

47. The Kills

One of my favorites from 08.

46. Lily Allen

Her album from this year is on many Top 5 lists. I liked it but did not have a lot of staying power for me.

45. The Kooks

Another favorite from 08. Hopefully, something new soon.

44. The Indelicates

Just a bit of fun irreverence.

43. The Faint

Nebraska's finest

42. Sea Wolf

Excellent live artist. New album this year did not grab me like his debut did, however.

41.Lou Barlow

Released my 2nd favorite album of 09. New artist for me found via a free download of Gravitate from the www.onetrackmind.com website. Has an extensive back catalog that I still need to check out. Have a feeling he will be in my charts for many years to come.

40. Nada Surf

Just some great indie rock

39. Minor Majority

The perfect artist for me when I am feeling a bit stressed and need some mellow.

38. Roxy Epoxy And The Rebound

Former lead singer of the Epoxies released a wonderful recording, Bandaids on Bullet Holes, this year. Check it out if you like a some pop punk with a side of attitude.

37. Sister Hazel

New album, Release, was a terrific return to form.

36. KaiserCartel

New artist for me, discovered them at the Underground Music Showcase this summer in Denver.

35. Eels

Just good stuff

34. The Submarines

another of my favorites from 08, hope to see more in the future.

33. Seven Mary Three

Great southern acoustic based rock

32. Oysterband

One of my favorite Celtic Rock music groups

31. Unkle Bob

Have a couple of really great songs

30. Blitzen Trapper

Furr was just wonderful

29. Elf Power

"Come lie down with me and sing my song" may be my favorite lyric of all time.

28. Collective Soul

New album, at first, seemed like just more of the same. However, songs like Dig really grew on me as the year went on.

27. Jethro Tull

As always. Some of the greatest folk rock ever recorded.

26. Ry Cooder

His latest record, I, Flathead, was wonderful. I actually need to listen to it more.

25. The Epoxies

All bow down to our robot overlords.

24. Journey

One of the surprises especially that they are so high. I like Journey, however, this ranking is mainly do to me trying to "tease" a relative who stayed with us for a time this summer. He hates Journey, so of course I had to play my entire catalog, loudly, while singing along.

23. Metric

Surprise here is that they are not higher up. Loved their latest album although lately I have really only played 2 songs from it. Must revisit.

22. Sahara Hotnights

One of my all time favorite groups, although I was very disappointed in their release this year, Sparks. It didn't have one.

21. The Ettes

Love this garage rock band out of California. One of the best live shows I went to in 09. I still need to pick up their new album released in the latter part of this year.

20. Gaslight Anthem

New artist for me. Can't wait to see what they come out with next.

19. The Sounds
Crossing The Rubicon was a great follow up to their breakthrough album.

18. Spyro Gyra

I do not listen to a lot of jazz. But, when I do, this band is it. Often played as background music while I do other stuff. Not sure what that says.

17. Bruce Springsteen

Almost entirely his back catalog. His last recording bordered on annoying. Still, his 1st 4 albums are masterpieces.

16. Yeah Yeah Yeahs

It's Blitz was very good although very different. Be interesting to see what they come up with next.

15. Chris Webb Band

My, by far, favorite local Denver band. Hopefully, they can get the backing to get more of their wonderful songs recorded. If you get a chance to see them live, please do so. Just wonderful.

14. The Action Design

Wonderful Pop with a little punk on the side.

13. leiana

Artist that has one of my most anticipated 2010 releases soon to come. Say yep!

12. Fleetwood Mac

Kiln House is my favorite album of all time. The Danny Kirwan era Mac were just so good.

11. Great Big Sea

The 2nd of my favorite Celtic Rock groups

10. Killola

Another with an early 2010 release that I can not wait for.

9. Idlewild

An artist i discovered in 08 via MusicRex & by_starla from last & blip.fm. Soaring vocals & songs that say something.

8. Gaelic Storm

Band that has become my favorite Celtic Rock group over the last year. Their songs are pure fun with just a side of silly.

7. Bif Naked

An artist who overcame so much. Her album, The Promise, is truly inspiring.

6. The Duke Spirit

Last years #2 continues to fuzz out my headphones. Just love them.

5. Serena Ryder

My favorite new artist this year. Her recording, Is it o.k., has so many wonderful songs. Certain she will top my charts for many years to come.

4. Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers

The greatest live band in this solar system.

3. Powderfinger

Golden Rule, just out, is a wonderful addition to this bands catalog. Iberian Dream & Poison In Your Mind are quickly becoming two of my favorites.

2. Bishop Allen

Another band that just knows how to write a fun song. Brings a chuckle every time i listen to them.

1. The Dollyrots

Surprise, not. My favorite band. Their songs just take away the stress, liven up my day, & bring a smile to my soul. New recording, hopefully, in early 2010. If so, a back flip may be in order.

Well, that's it. 09 to an end. 10 is sure to bring some great sounds, both new & old, to my well used pair of headphones. Hopefully, see ya here on last.fm, over at blip.fm, or in person at a gig.

2008 - Ein persönlicher Rückblick

Seit meinem letzten Blogeintrag wurde viel gesagt, gesungen und gescrobblet. Währendessen zog das Jahr 2008 in einem unglaublichen Tempo vorbei. Nun befinden wir uns wieder in dieser Zeit der Rückblicke und Best-of’s und da möchte ich es nicht lassen, auch meine persönlichen Highlights auf Last.fm zu verewigen (wenn man das im Web so sagen kann).

Es waren weder, „Change“ noch „Crisis“ die für mich im Vordergrund standen. Das Jahr 2008 bot eine Vielzahl an unvergesslichen Musikerlebnissen und diese kaschierten mir die meisten Flecken.

Nun lacht uns bereits 2009 entgegen und verspricht mit Bob Dylan, Antony and the Johnsons , Franz Ferdinand u.v.a. bereits wieder ein musikalisches Freudenfest zu werden.

Ich wünsche an dieser Stelle allen Last.fm Benutzern schöne Festtage und fröhliches Scrobbeln!

Hehe...a lot of them make me sad now because I spent soooooooo much time in my younger years being OBSESSED with this band. But legitimately, probably Hang. I don't cry much to music, but this is a sad one.

Right now it is Use Somebody. But I don't know if I could say that is my favorite. The new album is really good, but I also haven't listened to Aha Shake Heartbreak in a while. And THAT is my favorite album.

It depends on the day. Usually it is The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! but sometimes it is To Be Alone With You.
