The former frontman of Soul Coughing barely sounds like his former self. Doughty began writing solo songs in 1995, but nothing materialized until Soul Coughing broke up in 2000, at which point Doughty began touring solo with his acoustic guitar after becoming clean and sober. Skittish was finally released to the masses along with his new EP Rockity Roll on his current ATO record label.
Doughty has since formed a new touring band including an upright bass, drums and keyboard. He also recorded his latest album with a band for the first time since El Oso, Soul Coughing’s final record.
Doughty’s sound is that of muted acoustic guitar rhythms and nasally vocals with impeccable melodies. His lyrics are unique, and he can be described as a master wordsmith.
Recently, the artist has turned to a new direction for his new album, Golden Delicious. Instead of an acoustic gritty sound, he’s coming out fresh using things like electric guitars, stronger vocal backgrounds and even a cello. Golden Delicious was released on February 19th 2008.

Bought the new CD today at FYE, and I'm like struggling frantically to hook up my computer right now (I'm on someone elses) just so I can put this on my iPod, it's awesome. The CD packaging is really disappointing and there's really nothing special about it, even the CD itself is just the ATO Records logo. But the album itself is the same old Mike Doughty with a little bit more acoustic folk type songs.

I saw him in Annapolis on the Question Jar tour. Tickets sold out on Ticketmaster in 9 minutes. The show was excellent. Mr. Doughty can engage an audience like few I've ever seen before. It was fantastic to see him and I hope I get the chance again.

@Jamzilla - sorry for the several month delay in my response. A girl in the front row shouted out "No Peace Los Angeles" which Doughty promptly said was not on the setlist that night. When she (I believe jokingly) flipped him off he flipped out on her and called her some rather rude names before yelling at her to leave. She shouldn't have done what she did, but his reaction was uncalled for. Also, he stated that instead of leave the stage before their encore, they would just turn around and face the wall and wait for everyone to clap. This man has been an egomaniac since the Soul Coughing days. I love his music, but he isn't any hero of mine and he's hardly a good enough guitarist to back up his huge head.
