Biography

Mieli is the ambient-electro instrumental project for Brisbane artist Ryan Gobbe. Ryan is half of Fo_Tran, a click & cut/techno outfit selected to be part of the first SBS Whatever Music Sessions in 2001. Ryan also records under the name Two Tone and has released an album through Bug Records. As Mieli, Ryan says he comes from a textural approach which is less DJ-friendly, denser and less contained than his other work, with more humour.

Ryan creates electronic music derived from the use of purely digital media. He customises samples and sounds from virtual and software sources, adds micro-grooves with clicks/pops and scrapes and sometimes traditional electronic sounds.

From his computer set up at his home in Brisbane, Ryan creates, mixes and masters all his own material. “The great thing that artists have today is that you can (theoretically) complete things from zero all on your own,” Ryan explains. “What costs hundreds-of-thousands in the eighties now fits into the palm of your hand, or your lap, for a fraction of the price.”

With influences such as Vladislav Delay, Andreas Tillander, Joy Division, Kraftwerk and David Bowie, Ryan has crossed the line from casually playing with music software and studying production, to releasing full-length albums.
