Midnight Oil were an influential alternative rock band formed in Sydney, Australia in 1976. The band originally formed as “Farm” in 1972. The band is best known for their political activism and environmentalism and their 1987 worldwide hit single “Beds Are Burning”. For most of their career, the band consisted of Peter Garrett (vocals), Jim Moginie (guitar, keyboards), Martin Rotsey (guitar), Bones Hillman (bass, vocals) and Rob Hirst (drums). The band split in 2002 to allow Garrett to focus on his political career. He is currently a member of the Australian House of Representatives and the current Australian Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts. The band has reunited since then for two benefit concerts: the 2005 WaveAid concert for Indian Ocean Tsunami victions and in March 2009 the band reformed for two shows in Canberra as a warm up for the “Sound Relief” concert in Melbourne. A benefit for the Victorian Bushfire victims.

The Oils, as they are known to their fans, began as a progressive rock band called Farm in the early 1970s, then under the Midnight Oil name developed a reputation as an impressive and hard-working live act associated with the surfing community of Sydney. They became one of Australia’s most respected bands, known for their live performances, and also for their activism and support for community groups and causes.

10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 is a great album title because you find it obnoxious. Redneck Wonderland Earth and Sun and Moon Place Without A Postcard Red Sails In The Sunset are all very much under-rated albums.

It's almost impossible to pick a favourite album ... "A Place Without a Postcard" is great, bar the first song, which is horrible and doesn't fit in. I love the EP "Species Deceases" - 4 great rock songs. "Earth & Sun & Moon" is a great shout as well, but so are "Countdown" and "Red Sails". Picking one song is easiser. I'd go for "Pictures" or possibly "Brave Faces".

I've got to throw down the gaunlet and say that 'Earth and Sun and Moon' is The Oils best album. Not as politically charged as something like '10-1' or 'Diesel and Dust', yes, but still a great album from a band that (at the time) I thought had probably seen their best days already. I love when bands can come back and prove me totally wrong. Great musicians, everyone, and 'Earth and Sun and Moon' only grows more with age. Not that there's a technically terrible Oils album to be found, but if you're going to put a gun to my head.
