Biography

Michael James Hucknall (born 8 June 1960 in Manchester, England) is a British singer. Hucknall (also known as “Mick ‘Red’ Hucknall”) is the lead singer of British band Simply Red.

Hucknall was born in St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester, the son of Reg and Maureen Hucknall. Hucknall’s mother left the family when Hucknall was 3. He and his father lived very briefly in Bredbury before settling in Denton, where he grew up. Hucknall attended Audenshaw Grammar School for Boys.

Hucknall claims to have been among the people present at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester in June of 1976, where the Sex Pistols were playing. His interest in the music scene led to the launch of his career in the late seventies, when he was part of the formation of the band Frantic Elevators.

The Frantic Elevators released four singles, including a version of “Holding Back The Years”, which he would later record with Simply Red.

As lead singer and core member of Simply Red, he has become the identifiable face of the band. His face, including his long curly red hair, was featured prominently on album artwork and in videos.

Hucknall is also one of the founders and financial backers of the successful reggae label Blood and Fire. He also manages the record label “simplyred.com”.

Hucknall is active in politics, and is a prominent celebrity supporter of the UK Labour Party and is a close friend of British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

TRIBUTE TO BOBBY is absolutely perfect ! But I must say it wasn't a big surprise for me... If we go through Mick's material, attentively,we'll find a bit of Bobby's kind of music "hidden" in there. LEAD ME ON was the way Bobby has found to say that he wanted some lady's "love to be his only guide". Mick has said that in many other similar ways. "LOVE" was wht has always moved Mick while writing his songs or choosing some others to sing. All about love and the happiness and suffering it brings. "IT'S ONLY LOVE" he's been talking about. Love has been LEADing him ON his whole life. He's the guy who has said openly "I WANNA FALL FROM THE STARS STRAIGHT INTO YR ARMS" !!! And "SAY U LOVE ME ALL AROUND THE WORLD". It doesn't matter if he's singing "GRANMA'S HANDS", "FAIRGROUND", "COME..MY KITCHEN" , "4 YR BABIES", "N. NURSE", "SO NT OVER U", "HILLSIDE AV.", "PERFECT LOVE"... Whatever he sings,he'll be singing along with his soul, that's why Bobby's songs fitted perfectly in his voice.

That's odd...much as I love Mick, why are there *two* separate entries for his solo work (one listing him as "Hucknall" and the other as "Mick Hucknall")? Or did they simply decide that his music's so nice, it should be entered twice? :)

Hmm. It says just "Hucknall" on the cover, so maybe that's how he wants it tagged. Here's the infamous Jarvis (Cocker) conundrum once again...
