Michael Walter White (b. 1933) is a U.S. jazz violinist. (It is unclear why Last.fm wrongly redirects “Michael White” to “Michael White Project”.)
White was born on 24th May 1933 in Houston, Texas, growing up in Oakland, California. where at the age of nine he began playing the violin. He first became known in 1965 when he played with the John Handy Quintet at the Monterey Jazz Festival, and recorded three albums with Handy. White was among the first to play the violin in avant-garde jazz, and in the late 1960s became one of the first jazz violinists to play jazz-rock fusion (with his band Fourth Way).
White now lives in San Francisco, California. After a long period of obscurity, in the mid 1990s he was involved in a reunion of the Handy Quintet, and recorded an album as co-leader with Bill Frisell, Motion Picture (1997).

Need to update the bio, Michael White and Leisei Chen have moved to Los Angeles on Feburary 6th 2009 As Michael violin and Leisei voice, we have joined first recording session called BAA SESSION 10 here in LA on March 1st., as part of Build An Ark produced by Carlos Nino - DJ/Producer of Spaceways Radio, engineered by Banjamin Tierney (Suite For Ma Dukes.) We have recorded many improvisational pieces with fine LA musicians including Rebekah harp, Miguel viola, Peter cello, Paul sitar, Andres percussion, Kamau poet, Tylana violin and Jim organ.
