Michael was born in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. He began playing double bass in the school orchestra at the age of 11. At the same age, he taught himself classical guitar and began writing songs. Playing double bass in the school orchestra continued until year 12. Michael and school friends then created a band called “Used & Abused”. This band played gigs at other Schools, Yacht Clubs, Tennis Clubs and some wild out of control parties. Michael’s next band was “Arthur in the Dark” which played gigs all around Melbourne including supporting “Hunters & Collectors”, “Lime Spiders”, and other high profile bands. “Arthur in the Dark” won many battle of the band awards and did live to air shows on the radio. They played at (amongst other venues) the Prince of Wales Hotel, Richmond Club Hotel, Sydenum Hotel, Seaview Ballroom, Eveln Hotel, Punters Club hotel, gigs at UNI’s and many other venues. When Michael was at UNI, he started another band called “Black Tulips” This band played all around Melbourne & Geelong and supported “Paul Kelly”. The Saints”, The New Christs, “Ratcat” and many other well known bands at the time. “Black Tulips” played at the prestigous Palais (St. Kilda), Monash UNI, Swinbourne UNI, Rusden Campus, Prahran town Hall, Prince of Wales Hotel, Richmond Club Hotel, Esplenard Hotel, Evelyn Hotel, Punters Club hotel, gigs at UNI’s and many other venues. This band also had a weekly residency at the Prince of Wales Hotel in St. Kilda.
