Fri 19 Jun – Metric, Smile Smile, Sebastian Granger
We got to this show pretty late (after dinner at Nanzhou Noodle House - awesome hand drawn noodles), so I only saw a little of the second opener, and don't have much to report on that front.
The show was good. Metric
played all but one or two of the songs on Fantasies
. A number of the tracks that I'm not a huge fan of on the album (notably Twilight Galaxy
and Gold Guns Girls
) really benefited from a live performance. Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw are lots of fun to watch - Haines' angular body and style of movement really work well with the music. The entire set was ultra-high-energy, and the crowd was really into it.
A number of things could have been better though. The set was very short, with just 2 or 3 songs not from Fantasies (Dead Disco
and Monster Hospital
were great, in particular), I doubt if it was longer than 12 songs. And just one encore, though it ended with a really excellent acoustic version of Live It Out
. I've never been impressed with the sound at the Troc, and last night was no exception, though it's hard to blame the band for that. …
