The Thing That Should Not Be (6:34)

Cover of Master of Puppets

From Master of Puppets and 69 other releases

The Thing That Should Not Be is the third track off Metallica’s 1986 album Master of Puppets.

The song, keeping the general control theme of the album, discusses the story of Cthulhu by H.P. Lovecraft, with Cthulhu being the focus of the song and documenting his control over his followers. The song also takes lyrical inspiration from lines in Lovecraft’s book Necronomicon. Musically the song is a marked contrast from the rest of the songs on the album, being slower and having a subdued intensity.

"The overall sound has some similarities to First Wave Black Metal and/or death metal. In fact, the riff sounds like it was ripped from a Sarcófago album." INTERESTING point of view. The slowest, but my favourite from Master of Puppets.

"the intro is great, the rest of the song is just so repetitive that makes it boring." nope, the whole song is fucking heavy, i don't like the solo as it seems irrelevent to the rythm parts, but i do like the riff and bass lines and god that heaviness with that creepy lyrics. BOOM!

To be fair, I understand the complaints that this song is repetitive, but to that I will also say WELL DUHHHHHH! It's a slow, riff-driven song. If you're not a fan of the guitar riff, there's little else for you to like. The overall sound has some similarities to First Wave Black Metal and/or death metal. In fact, the riff sounds like it was ripped from a Sarcófago album. Also, that bizarre outro sequence is by far my favorite part of the song.

I love the S&M version of this as well, the strings give it a new element, but you can't beat the original.
