Orion (8:26)

Cover of Master of Puppets

From Master of Puppets and 44 other releases

“Orion” is the 7th track off of Metallica’s 3rd studio album, “Master of Puppets”. It was named after the star constellation, Orion, due to the song’s spacey sounding bridge. It was written by James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Cliff Burton. The song is more progressive than the band’s previous work.

There are three main parts of the song: the heavy beginning, the spacey interlude, and the ending recapitulation that brings back the heaviness. The song features four solos: the first one by James Hetfield, the second one by Kirk Hammett, the third, a bass solo by Cliff Burton, and the last by Hammett.

This song was played at the memorial for Cliff Burton, most notably because of the bass solo. It was also played live in 2006 when Metallica played the entire Master of Puppets album.

just a great progressive metal instrumental that blows me away all the time, tracks like this are what makes 'Master Of Puppets' by far for me there best album. The slow bit in the middle when the bass comes in is amazingly haunting love it

My favorite part will always remain the first section. [2] This man gets it. That fade in drum line at the beginning, and then the hardcore riffing. Nothing beats that. Not even the awesome solo at the end.

I still remember playing this when I started playing bass... I couldn't play it, of course not. But I remembered that Cliff could do anything when he wanted to. So I kept playing - And at the end, I could play it. It didn't even take many months. How I love this song. :3

Mastodon made a career out of this song, and that's a good thing.

The first part is a bit lame, but with nice solos. The second part is amazing.
