The song is written from the perspective of the Angel of Death from the Exodus book of the Bible and chronicles the plagues of Blood, Hail, Darkness, and finally the Death of the Firstborn, the Creeping Death of the title. The song was inspired by bassist Cliff Burton while the band was watching The Ten Commandments film.

great song, which correctly describes the Bible story as a display of Gods power rather than the liberation of the Jews. Indeed, it was written (repeatedly) that God hardened Pharaoh´s heart so that he would not release the Jews. If setting them free was the sole aim, it could have been achieved at a much lower price, couldn't it? The Bible is very clear about all this, make no mistake.
