About this album

“No Life ‘til Leather” is Metallica’s widely circulated demo tape that mainly is known only to the dedicated Metallica fans. All the tracks are early recordings of songs that would later appear on the band’s Kill ‘Em All album. The track listing on Kill ‘Em All is the same as that on the demo tape, save the addition of Cliff Burton’s bass solo “(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth”, “Whiplash”, “No Remorse” and “The Mechanix.”

The title of the demo comes from the first line of Hit the Lights.

It has been re-released twice unofficially, first under the title of Metallica—Bay Area Thrashers, and was alleged to be a live bootleg recording of Metallica in the early days, however all ‘live’ sounds had been added from various sources including the Metallica video Cliff ‘Em All. This was soon discovered by Metallica and all copies were removed from stores. The demo was re-released a second time under the title Metallica—In the Beginning… Live, containing no differences from Metallica-Bay Area Thrashers.

The demo tape also features vocals and lead guitar from Dave Mustaine before he left Metallica.

Thats the first physical material that I got from Metallica, but it was a cassette back in 2007, lol. After all these years I got all the records and I still have the old tape.

Completely badass with Dave on it. And it just sounds much more alive than nay of met's actual records. Don't get me wrong, the first four albums are really great, but they just sound so fucking sterile!

I love this demo, I found this at an old record store in Delaware. After purchacing it I practally did a cartwheel. Could you imagine me doing a cartwheel? Awsom demo. James sounds like Axl Rose in this one, especially on "Motorbreath"
