mounds of feeble trouble drop from the skies
I've seen an ailing nothing where the outer space lies
Powder kegs and marbles [of mumbles?] turn from gray to green eyes
I won't be sentimental

I remember when Boces came out, I was there at Haffa's in Athens, OH to pick it up.. Went straight home to listen.. what a way to open an album! My favorite Mercury Rev song!

BTW, this song is huge, a world of its own in a span of just 10 and a half minutes

Till 1993 Mercury Rev was one of the best bands ever... What came after, pales a lot compared to their first years

If time flies when you're having fun, this is the shortest 10+ minute song ever recorded.

Yeah, like some have said, in some ways Boces would have made a good conclusion. After that they backed off into a much more traditional sound, which personally i find alright enough - and obviously eventually gained them more listeners - but utterly lacked the earlier magic and madness.

They create a great melody, suspend it from the most delicate woodwind, and then collapse all around it. If sane people could do this, it would become a formula.

one of the finest beginnings ever made

...and the last three minutes have the same vibe as the collaboration they did with the great Robert Creeley ("So There") and the equally cinematic (though more noir) collaboration with Alan Vega ("Dead Man") the hell did this band pull all of this off?!? A special bunch indeed! Not just your average guitar-wielding wankers...

so "Chasing A Bee"...and like "Empire State"...just like the Velvets on "Sister Ray" you know you are being assaulted by a guitar...such joy in these sounds for me!

Boces is my favorite album of theirs, but this should have been the conclusion. How could you possibly top this?
