Mojuba (4:58)

Cover of Ancients Speak

From Ancients Speak

This track from the Elevated Enity project features Amayo, lead singer for Anitbalas Afrobeat Orchestra on lead vocals, John Medeski of Medeski, Martin and Wood on keyboards, a horn section and Melvin Gibbs doing drum programming and playing bass.
In this song Amayo signs a musical prayer in Yoruba, the language of the Orishas
to the forces of nature and to the babalawos, the “keepers of the secrets” ,the diviners of the Yoruba/Orisha religion.

A “mojuba” in Yoruba religion is the prayer of salutation that accompanies
the opening libation to the spirits. The “pouring out” of liquor so often seen in hip-hop videos represents the African-American remnant of this Pan-African custom.

the Mojuba horns:
Ron Blake: baritone sax
Micah Gaugh: tenor sax
Casey Benjamin: alto sax
Graham Haynes: trumpet
