About this album

Matthew Sweet’s third album is a remarkable artistic breakthrough. Grounded in the guitar pop of The Beatles, Big Star, The Byrds, R.E.M., and Neil Young, Girlfriend melds all of Sweet’s influences into one majestic, wrenching sound that encompasses both the gentle country-rock of “Winona” and the winding guitars of “Girlfriend” and “Divine Intervention. ” Sweet’s music might have recognizable roots, but Girlfriend never sounds derivative; thanks to his exceptional songwriting, the album is a fresh, original interpretation of a classic sound.

It's a pic of Tuesday Weld - Sweet talks about it in this interview: http://www.spin.com/articles/matthew-sweet-looks-back-20-years-girlfriend/

Still have this on cassette; the fuzz and delays make it nastalgic, a classic!

I listened to this constantly in 1991 and 1992. It still holds up after all this time.

Really great album. Received a lot of critical praises upon release also. It's just too bad it got overlooked/forgotten once Nirvana's "Nevermind" began to get major airplay around the same time, and grunge became the "flavor of the moment".

Whether or not I am under the influence of Samuel Adams (brew), I always enjoy every one of Michael Sweet's tunes. The lyrics are what is important here, LISTEN ... UNDERSTAND ... and ENJOY - of course! He speaks volumes, you need only to listen! My feeling is that anyone between 20 and 45 will enjoy his music stylings and maybe the younglings will smarten up and take a listen too.
