Matt Uelmen is a dark ambient musician based in Los Angeles, California. He is best known for his work on various computer games for Blizzard Entertainment from 1996 to 2007. He is currently employed at the Runic Games.

Matt was born in July 31, 1973 in the South Bay area of greater Los Angeles. Almost all of his formal training in music came through piano lessons from Lenée Bilski from the ages of 6 to 13, which were discontinued when his family moved to San Jose, California during his high school years. Matt is largely self-taught as a multi-instrumentalist and orchestrator, with a familiarity with instruments in the keyboard, guitar, flute and percussion families. Most of his performance experience is on the keyboard, though the piece most associated with him, “Tristram” or “Towne” from the Diablo series of computer games, features his playing on 12-string guitar and flute.

This series of games was the core creation of his employer, Condor Inc (later renamed Blizzard North), where he worked for 11 years. This series is estimated to have collectively sold over twenty million copies and, more remarkably, was still on the shelves at major retailers over a decade after the release of the original “Diablo” and seven years after the release of the final installation in the series, “Diablo II: Lord of Destruction”. This expansion also featured Matt’s first foray into full orchestral writing, with a performance by the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra.

I don't like Ulver nearly as much as I like Váli, and I can't quite pinpoint why. @Synchro! Have you heard Matt Uelmen's Torchlight tracks? There's also Karl Sanders' two Saurian albums, which are mostly instrumental but are very Egyptian, but it's not all that similar to Matt Uelmen. Just more similar than most (check out the intro to Whence No Traveler Returns). Try the Gladiator OST too, although it's mostly orchestral, most tracks have a similar, very dark feel.

Jason, I think, created some amazing ambient work for the original World of Warcraft, and the Warcraft 3 guys also made great background music. Never during playing WC3 did the music feel tedious or repetitive and it has what, 4 songs for each race? That's like 15-20 minutes of music never feeling repetitive - gotta respect that. Now, as far as TBC soundtrack goes, I love it, mostly for the ambient tracks such as Shards of the Exodar or Netherstorm, and you can really hear Uelmen on the soundtrack, he has that *thing* that makes you know it's him. And though I haven't played WotLK, I must say the soundtrack album feels too overwhelming and grand, it's not all about huge orchestras and massive choirs - it lacks Matt's (and Jason's :> ) subtlety and ambiance. ..anyways, shame they aren't working on Diablo 3, I doubt Blizz will be able to make you feel like you're there in the way Diablo 2 managed to. Just my 2 gold.

Well :), as you mentioned, Jason is really best known for his epic stuff(by the way regarding WoW official soundtrack with "exclusive tracks" and grand "city themes"), but he is able to calm himself and shift to more ambient and spooky stuff as well(for example my favorite Mulgore, Elwynn, Duskwood and "musical moments" thru MPQextractor). Your definition of the "ambient" is outright, agree. I love Derek's sense for scene(here and here) although his music more likely reflects WoW 3D landscapes. Thus I'd say: Russell for dramatic scenes, Jason/Derek/Tracy for ambience. :) Hope that Blizzard know what they are doing with Russell and his wild inclination for orchestra.:D

Agree with Russell. And other guys sounds kinda same to me(just because I listen to a lot of WoW soundtracks). Jason Hayes is also too much into epic stuff - as you mentioned some big battles, not ambient. Glenn Stafford can really make some catchy songs, not epic, not ambient, something in the middle. But when they are catchy, it goes under your skin and ambient should be something which doesn't take your attention so often. And finally I kinda agree with Derek and Tracy. They should be involved in D3 soundtracks more than Russell.

Agree, however I think Matt is not in the Blizzard North anymore, so just Russell Brower will be responsible for Diablo 3 music. When I heard it, I was quiet disappointed, although Russell brought some precious music themes into World of Warcraft series(Ebon Hold, Grizzly Hills). Russell is IMHO really good composer for majestic and "action" themes with choirs though, but he will not be able to bring due ambience for Diablo, which is different from WoW in many respects. Why everybody forgot about Derek Duke, Tracy Bush, Glenn Stafford or Jason Hayes? I'd rather imagine just their effort in Diablo 3 ambience. Nothing against Russell, I admit him as well, but I'd place his ideas at the most in the D3 cinematic videos, D3 main menu or during boss fight, nothing else. :)

I meant I wish Matt to do the soundtrack for D3 :) there is indeed no similarity. Anyway by my opinion Matt got the right atmosphere for Diablo series. No more Matt = no more such a great feeling from Diablo anymore.
