Mats d Hermansson has been playing the Scottish bagpipes since the age of 14. He got his basic knowledge of piping from James Kirkpatrick, a pipe maker from Bonhill, south of Loch Lomond. In 1976 Mats started The Murray Pipes & Drums (of Gothenburg) together with a few friends. He was the pipe-major (band leader) from the start until 2008, when he moved abroad for a year. Mats holds the degree of doctor of philosophy in musicology. His thesis ‘From Icon to Identity: Scottish Piping & Drumming in Scandinavia’ was published at the University of Gothenburg in 2003.
Mats has devoted most of his life to playing and teaching the great Highland bagpipe. He has been an often invited guest teacher to many Scandinavian pipe bands. He has also won a number of solo competitions in Scandinavia and has also acted as a piping adjudicator at Scandinavian piping competitions.
Over the years Mats has performed as a soloist and with the band at a great number of events in Sweden, Scandinavia, Scotland, Germany, France and Tenerife. He has also appeared a number of times on television.
