Unfinished Sympathy (5:16)

Cover of Blue Lines

From Blue Lines and 51 other releases

“Unfinished Sympathy” is a song by Massive Attack. The song originally appeared on the group’s 1991 debut album Blue Lines, and was the second single released from the album on February 11, 1991 and got as high as no13 in the UK. It features Shara Nelson on lead vocals, and is generally recognized as a pioneering song in the genre.

The percussion loop is the “belly break” sampled from a Bob James’ cover Take Me to the Mardi Gras of Paul Simon’s track of the same name. The voice at the beginning of the song is a sample of John McLaughlin, whose voice was sampled without clearance.

DeValanten - The video preceded Springsteen by 3 years and the Verve by 6! I think you could say they are the versions! One of those songs that will be a classic of modern music.

So emotional string section presence, much dramatic shades! Piano dynamic passages from forte to pianissimo are also wonderful. By the way, video looks like an art-house version of Verve's "Bittersweet symphony" and Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia".

Something about the music in this song scares me...it's kinda creepy. Fantastic song though.

It amazes me how little this song has aged, it still sounds as fresh as it did when it was released. Easily one of my top ten songs, ever.

Today I learned, the title was inspired by Franz Schubert's "Unfinished Symphony"
