Mary Ann Willis has been a professional violinist performing and teaching in Houston, Texas since 1977. She is the author of seven book/recording volumes of ethnic and classical music for Mel Bay Publications (five published under Mary Ann Harbar). Mary Ann has played with numerous symphony orchestras throughout the United States and the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy. She has soloed with the orchestra of the Balalaika and Domra Association of America in Washington, D.C. and has been a Houston Community College faculty member starting in 1988.

With a BA in music from the University of California, Mary Ann holds both California and Texas Teacher Certificates in Music and has attended teaching workshops under Shinichi Suzuki and Kato Havas. She has completed classical violin studies at the University of California, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Bennington College and L’Institut de Hautes Etudes Musicales in Montreux, Switzerland with Zino Francescatti. Also, she has studied Jazz Improvisation at Houston Community College.

Mary Ann has studied with native folk violinists and fiddlers in Hungarian Gypsy, Romanian, Klezmer, Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, Czech, Scandinavian, Irish, Mexican, Texas Style, Old Time, Bluegrass, and Cajun styles. She has transcribed and studied recordings in numerous styles and is a member of both the American String Teachers Association and American Federation of Musicians.
