  • What If? Top Prog Albums

    20 Aug 2012, 10:09 by Mark_H

OK, so this friend of mine (hey Paul!) asked a great What If? We had been discussing the disparity between the great ratings of early Prog albums compared to lesser ratings of many modern ones. One of the thoughts that cropped up was that modern albums tend to be bloated; that is the CD format allows the artist to fill up the space with mediocre tracks that would probably not have made it onto a vinyl release. So, what if we level the playing field and take only the best 40 minutes worth of each album and generate ratings from those tracks??

The results are below :D The number in (brackets) shows how an album's position changes against my last published chart and gives a great indication of how the albums would rate if they kept to a fixed time limit. The number in shows the change in rating from the normal chart.

Now there are weaknesses with this approach, particularly for concept albums that need the space to spread their story, but remember this is just an experiment.

  • Night of the Prog VI, Lorelei

  • Prog Albums: Decade: 2000s

When rating prog albums I try to do so in a historical context, that is how an album compares against the entire body of Prog. This means that the best album for any given year, which most people would rate with top marks may not receive the same rating in my charts as only the best albums of all time should get the highest ratings... This chart does not include compilations or live albums.

    My Ratings:
Note: I vote on a bell curve, anything above 6 is really good, anything much below 4 really isn't :D

2009 has so far seemed to be a fruitful year for Prog. Actually, many bands are riding on the crest of the wave with their new albums. Let me name some that have blown my mind:

Delirium - Il nome del vento

A nostalgic flash-back to the roots of 70’s Italian Prog. After the first spin, I was fairly certain this was a fantastic work. And now , after perpetual rounds on my PC, I could even say the latest effort from Delirium is a top-class Prog album. I’ve been totally impressed with the lush symphonic moments, gorgeous tunes, superb techniques as well as harmonic textures. It’s too bad that not many people know such a great act.
Stand-out tracks: Dopo il Vento, Verso il Naufragio,…
    My rating: 9/10

    MartiganVision

What an album ! An incredible brew of old values & fresh materials. This music is exactly what I’ve expected from Neo Prog in its new era. It’s actually occupied my mind for many consecutive days. And the more I listen to this pure gem the more it grows on me. …
