About this album
Visions and Voices was recorded in the early 1990’s with Gene Moore co-producing along with Mark Shepard.
Mark Shepard provides the vocals, acoustic guitar and exotic hand drums from around the world as well as the singer/songwriter credits. This is the first CD where Shepard includes his signature Overtone Singing styles along with acoustic hand drumming.
Gene Moore plays masterful electric guitar as well as most of the other instruments.
Featured guest artists are:
Joel D. Arthur on Bass,
Dianne Legro and Andrea Nettleton on back up vocals.
David Amram on Irish Low Whistle
the songs on Visions and Voices were inspired by Shepard’s “Spiritual but not religious” quest for understanding the universe and life’s purpose. The music is inspired by great singer/songwriters along the lines of Joni Mitchell, Peter Gabriel, jackson Browne, James, Taylor, as well as World Beat voices such as Youssou Ndour, and Paul Simon.
Around this time Shepard began to study African Drumming as well as the Irish Bodhran and various Frame drumming techniques and overtone singing.
Hard to say where it fits musically. Probably along with paul Simon’s Graceland and any of Peter Gabriel’s songs that make use of African percussion and vocal styles…
