Mark Kozelek (born 1967 in Massillion, Ohio) is an American singer-songwriter and frontman of Sun Kil Moon and Red House Painters.
After relocating to San Francisco in 1989, Kozelek became a lynchpin of the slowcore movement in alternative rock with Red House Painters. His harrowing autobiographical lyrics gave unflinchingly detailed accounts of pain, despair and loss while the lengthy accompanying music was slow, intense, dissonant and bleak. As time has passed, his music has become more acoustic and folk-inflected, while his lyrics now seem obsessed with nostalgia, traveling and those who died before their natural time, arguably best demonstrated on Sun Kil Moon’s Ghosts of the Great Highway.
Kozelek was a troubled child, born in Ohio and allegedly addicted to drugs by the age of 10. He entered rehab a few years later and clung to music and songwriting to get him through the days.

Anyone who thinks Mark Kozelek is a jerk should watch the tour documentary. He just sees audience yellers as attention needy. Just seems like a regular guy who likes to drink tea and drink beer sometimes. I think everyone underestimates the absolute grind of a tour. There's nothing quite like seeing him live.

I saw him in CT a few months back. He played most of the new album, a Modest Mouse or two, 3-4 Red House Painters songs and a couple that have been released under his name (New Partner and maybe something else....) either way, it was really good. It was seated/silent and he just took care of fuckin' business.

Smithslover1: He plays RHP songs for sure. Recent tours have had him play Cruiser, Mistress, Summer Dress, Katy Song, Revelation Big Sur... Sun Kil Moon, the same. You'll get Duk Koo Kim, Glenn Tipton, Heron Blue, Blue Orchids, but he plays a lot from the newest record. Fucking go, I've seen him three times and solo was BY FAR the best.
