Biography

Mark Jansen, (born December 15, 1978 in Netherlands), is a musician.

In 1995 Mark founded Apocalypse with Sander Gommans (which later renamed After Forever), and was one of the main songwriters since their debut album Prison of Desire. He left After Forever in 2002, and after he left the band took a new musical direction. Mark started a new band called Sahara Dust, which was later renamed Epica. His girlfriend at the time, Simone Simons, joined the band in 2003. In both After Forever and Epica, Mark has performed growled vocals to compliment the soprano style of the band’s main singer.

In 2010 Mark announced that he has formed another band called MaYaN. Unlike his other bands, Jansen sings in MaYaN but does not play guitar. The band released their debut album Quarterpast in spring 2011.

    I don't agree with the "needs to shut up" tag - Epica with only Simone would be boring. [7] It would be way too boring, I would actually stop listening to any new material. Seriously, I like Simone's voice, but she sounds just okay and all average to me. Epica sounds so awesome because of all the elements they already have.

    Mark is a great composer and musician. I have talked to him on every show, we are friends and I have to say that I don't know the most inteligent person! He created Epica and he is a heart of this group, his growls and screams are good and if somebody don't like it I have one advice - don't listen.

    I do think Mark's growling and screaming ability is OK. Just listen to MaYan, he's actually pretty good and I do agree with him being a pimp =) I have also watched live performances of MaYan on youtube and it was pretty good!

    His voice sucks and his looks totally are overrated (if Mark is hot, then so is Radek Stepanek). Thank god he writes good (AWESOME) music. I don't agree that Epica would be boring with just Simone on vocals. Because when I listen to songs like "Chasing the Dragon", I want EVERYBODY TO SING ON THAT SONG EXCEPT FUCKING MARK. It's so good until he ruins it.
