Marina Lambrini Diamandis (Greek: Μαρίνα-Λαμπρινή Διαμάντη, pronounced /diːəˈmændi/ dee-a-man-dee, born 10 October 1985 in Abergavenny, Wales, United Kingdom), better known by her stage name Marina and the Diamonds (sometimes stylised as Marina & the Diamonds), is a Welsh singer of Greek descent. She rose to fame after reaching number two on the BBC Sound of 2010 poll list. Despite the name, Marina is a solo act, with the “Diamonds” being what she refers to as her fans.
Marina released her first single, (a double A-side single ‘Obsessions / Mowgli’s Road’) through Neon Gold Records on Valentines Day, 2009, closely followed by “The Crown Jewels EP” in June 2009. Now signed to 679 Recordings, she released her debut full-length studio album, “The Family Jewels” on 22nd February 2010, followed by her debut American release, “The American Jewels EP”, on May 25th 2010.
Marina’s first major label single, a re-recording of “
Mowgli’s Road”, was released in November 2009 under 679 Recordings in the UK. Marina’s debut album The Family Jewels was released on 22 February 2010. It peaked at number five in the UK Albums Chart and was certified silver in the United Kingdom days before its release. “Hollywood” was released as the lead single from the album on 1 February 2010, followed by a re-release of “I Am Not a Robot” on the 26 April 2010. Diamandis said she decided to re-release the song because “people seem to empathize and relate with the song, regardless of gender or age.”
