Biography

Most of Marc Pullen’s music has a dark sound to it, mixed with aggression and rage. On his web site he reflects how his music relates to him saying, “I’m not necessarily an angry or depressed person (although I am intense), it’s more that the music I write is something that stirs up powerful emotions.” Pullen has been making music for about 21 years now and can play a wide variety of instruments. Some of his favorites include the electric guitar, classical/nylon string guitar, electric bass, dulcimer, banjo, violin and the hammered dulcimer.

Marc got into the modern computer in the mid-90’s after a long and hard career in restaurant management. As his computer skills developed, he combined them with his musical skills and started recording his solo music. The appeal for Pullen came from the control: there was no argumentative band members, just him and his music.

So since then, he has managed to record and release more than 30 albums and 322 songs, all available for free on fanaticalproductions.net and last.fm. His music is used in both the Cube and the Sauerbraten game engines.

Marc A. Pullen is also on last.fm as marcpullen.

I downloaded Sauerbraten back in mid '08 on the week CTF got released. Sighed a massive fuck when I found out three years later that had I only downloaded it when I saw it right there, I would have gotten Assassin before. But through both of these I met your music and style. Ask me on opinion, won't you? Very great indeed. Sad all Hollywood fails to be as good.

Ahhh, so bad you don't have tabs :/ I love your stuff, but I'm not skilled enough to play it by ear. Any tips for approching your style ? Effects used, recurrent patterns, tuning, EQ... I currently own a Schecter Hellraiser C-1 with Floyd Rose, Blackstar HT-5, a TubeScreamer and a Boss Chorus (CE-5). Thanks for your help !

Hope you will find the new amp soon;) But... why? Even if you used samples with low bitrate, guitars was recorded in good quality, am I right? I think that bitrate of final songs must be at least 192 kbps, but the best variant is 320.

YurCompMan - still shopping for a new effect preamp. I got a new 8 string guitar, but the amp is holding me back for now. I tried higher encoding a few years back but I couldn't tell the difference.

So, do you have any progress with a new album? Marc, can you upload your albums in good quality (at least more than 128 kbps) to some filehosting or torrent tracker?

Sorry, no tabs. I don't enjoy writing them. Dunno if I was ever ahead of anything, but yeah, I'm digging it. I keep finding great bands with new sounding stuff. Although it's making writing new music difficult, so much great stuff to live up to. I've been listening a lot to Whitechapel and After The Burial lately. Nothing new right away. I might release another "raretracks" thing, but all the songs would be really really short idea snips I probably won't ever use. Those kind of songs don't do well on a site like this. But I have a new 8 string guitar on the way, and I'm aiming for some new brutal stuff similar to Odious, but I'd like to do a vocals version and a separate very similar instrumental version of the album, and get the instrumental version for use in the Sauerbraten/Cube 2 game. I'm sure people are sick of Odious in there by now.

It's kind of funny, bands with (sort of) your style are everywhere now. How does it feel to have been ahead of the djent wave?

I use Sound Font Banks via Sound Blaster sound cards. If you can use Sound Font Banks, google that. There are a bazillion free ones that sound good you could use, and some cheap pay ones as well.

Hey Marc, Great work on Odious! That album is incredible and I listen to it Frequently. I too work on solo projects, you can have a listen here: http://www.myspace.com/chainlessseb if ever you feel like it. I'm also working on other more groovy and melodic instrumental projects that would be more fit for gaming. Keep up with your inspiring good work and I'll be waiting to hear some new material from you!
