Blackwood, Wales (1986 – present)

Manic Street Preachers are an alternative rock band from Blackwood, Wales, formed in 1986. Often referred to as “the Manics”, they are James Dean Bradfield (vocals, guitars), Nicky Wire (bass, occasional vocals) and Sean Moore (drums, backing vocals, occasional trumpet). The band were originally a quartet: lyricist and rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards mysteriously vanished on 1 February 1995. He was declared presumed deceased in November 2008.

The Manics released their debut album Generation Terrorists in 1992. Their combination of androgynous glam punk imagery, outspoken invective and songs about “culture, alienation, boredom and despair” soon gained them a loyal following and cult status. The band’s later albums retained a politicized and intellectual lyrical style, while adopting a broader alternative rock sound. Enigmatic lyricist Richey Edwards gained early notoriety by carving the words “4 REAL” into his arm with a razor blade (narrowly missing an artery and requiring seventeen stitches) in response to the suggestion that the band were less than authentic. The dark nature of 1994’s The Holy Bible reflected the culmination of Edwards’ instability.

Following Edwards’ disappearance, Bradfield, Moore, and Wire persisted with the Manic Street Preachers and went on to gain critical and commercial success, becoming one of Britain’s premier rock bands. They have had eight top ten albums and fifteen top ten singles.

I've been a fan for a year and known them for 3 years. Not really care about who is dead and who isn't in the band. I love the music, the lyrics and their gigs. I don't think this makes me a poser. It's not my fault that I hadn't even known about their existence until Send Away The Tigers came out.

i have a feeling that if i were around and old enough when the manics started, i'd like them. but i end up liking bands way after they start, it's the problem with being a young american teenager.

Defunct47: You make an excellent, and very well formulated, point! I should have been clearer about that: I'm not "laying into" people who are, or became, fans after RJE disappeared. I myself became a huge Joy Division fan AFTER Ian Curtis died, simply because I was too young at the time. But I didn't become a fan BECAUSE they got hyped as a result of his suicide (just as you obvously didn't with MSP), but because I happened to hear "Love Will Tear Us Apart" when I was a morose hormonal 15 year old. I'm not sure I'm with you on the "finding a band underneath lesser work" being more special; you either like what you hear, critically acclaimed or not, or you move on; but I don't think you get points for seniority either. And I know I was being somewhat unfair, I was trying to make a point. It seems I may have sprayed a little to wide....

"Let the posers be..." That's just not gonna happen :-). Also, if you're an adult, and you *became* an MJ fan in the short space between the time he died and now, chances are you ARE a poser :-)

To be fair eham - it isn't like this shoutbox always looked like it did yesterday, generally it will say things about the band as a whole and their music and everything that you would expect. Also, it seems a little disrespectful to lay into people just because of when they were born, I mean it isn't like I selected 1992. In a way I think it is more special to have found their back catalogue and brilliance underneath the gloss of their later (still pretty darn good) work and without the music press going, 'hey guys check out this band they are super cool!'. I may not technically 'miss' Richey being as I was never aware of his prescence but he wrote the lyrics to 'Yes' and that makes him pretty damn important to me so on the anniversary of him disappearing I want to share that with other people that feel the same.

I also think this "who is a poser and who is not" subject is really boring, for example almost everyone who dared to say he liked Heath Ledger's movies or that he enjoys MJ's music after they died got flamed as a poser. Everybody knows themselves in their hearts how true of a fan they are .. :) (and I repeat that I DO understand your point, I just think that let the so called posers be..)

"but I feel you reaction is a bit knee-jerk, rather than actually trying to understand what it is I was trying to convey." - I understand perfectly what you are trying to say. But I do think people who are fan of Richey, are that because of his lyrics. I could be wrong though. :)

To reiterate: Richey is cool; The Holy Bible is an amazing album; and I really don't like posers.

Scarlett, I love you like a sister ;-), but I feel you reaction is a bit knee-jerk, rather than actually trying to understand what it is I was trying to convey. Or maybe I wasn't very clear. 1) I DID explain that. Pretty thoroughly. 2) I don't mention Sean because important as he may be, he is not a big creative contributor, and he would be the first to admit it. It has nothing to do with (dis)respect, it's simply not relevant to the discourse. 3) You are absolutely right, I am generalizing to make a point. 4b) Again, my problem is not with fandom as long as it's based on genuine appreciation of the artists work, which is not always the case here. 4b) I love and admire a lot of artist and people who are dead - suicide or otherwise. I think you're somewhat missing my point here... And again, you're free to love and idolize RJE or whomever to your hearts content, There's just something disingenuous about 85% of the shouts being only about missing RJE, rather than about MSP or Holy Bible.

Please explain why remembering Richey is disrespectful to JD and Nicky? Also, I think it's disrespectful of you not to mention Sean anywhere. I understand your so called "problem" but you are generlizing too much I think. For example, George Harrison didn't commit suicide yet I'm still sad that it will be already 10 years since he died (next year).

My problem is obviously not with Richey, but with hypocrits and posers who starts clinging to an artist after, and because, he or she (presumably) commits suicide. Like Joy Division, Jeff Buckley, etc, who sold a lot of albums to fans who "always loved them" AFTER they died. I've been a fan since Motown Junk, and I've seen them live (amazing!); and while Richey was very charismatic and did bring some great lyrics to the table, let's be honest, he was in no way a bigger part of Manics than James or Nicky, even in those days, and he certainly wasn't when a lot of these people became fans. So be a fan by all means, but don't romanticize someone just because he killed himself (presumably).

Eham:some good points,i have always been alarmed at the Fetishizing of Artists like Richey and Ian Curtis. But most shouts are just registering their love for some one who meant a lot to us, who saw him and those that didn't,i dont think remembering Richey in anyway is disrespectful to JDB,Nicky and Sean..Dont down play Richey's contribution to the Greatest Rock Band in the World..Lol

Seriously people? Most of you moaning about Richey weren't even alive when he disappeared, let alone Manics fans. Also, it's seems a little disrespectful to J.D. and Nicky. You know, the ones who actually wrote, and writes, the music and most of the lyrics. And actually play instruments. Get over yourselves.
