Japan (1992 – 2001)

MALICE MIZER was a Japanese visual kei band originally formed in August of 1992 by guitarists Mana and Közi, who had previously been in a band together called 摩天楼 (Matenrou). After going through three vocalists and three distinctive periods of musical and visual style, the wildly successful group went on “hiatus” December 11th, 2001.

MALICE MIZER’s first era, the Tetsu era, lasted from 1992 until 1994. Line-up: Tetsu (vocalist), Gaz (drums), Yu~ki (bass), Közi (guitar), and Mana (guitar). Gaz was replaced by Kami at the beginning of this era, and Gaz was only in the band for about a half a year.

The GACKT era followed after a one-year hiatus, beginning in 1995 and lasting until 1999. Line-up: Gackt (vocalist), Kami (drums), Yu~ki (bass), Közi (guitar), and Mana (guitar). This era was considered MALICE MIZER’s “major” era, because after Voyage was released, MALICE MIZER signed to major record label Nippon columbia and released merveilles, which is largely considered their best album. After the release of merveilles, Gackt announced his departure from the band, and in June of 1999, Kami died of a subarachnoid hemorrhage. MALICE MIZER was then reverted back into an indies status, on Mana’s label Midi:Nette.

The final era featured Klaha , a classically trained opera vocalist. This lasted from 2000 until the eventual hiatus in 2001, from which it is largely believed they will not return, and many consider MALICE MIZER to be disbanded. Line-up: Klaha (vocalist), Yu~ki (bass), Közi (guitar), and Mana (guitar).

All I wish for is an option to choose your own photo for on your page. Especially when it's the case a band has had different lineups.

Personally, I don't think it should be an argument, but it's a perfectly valid discussion point since the three eras of MM were so different. This is a last fm shoutbox though...

There shouldn't be a Gackt vs Klaha argument in the first place. Grow up, kids.

V Thanks for the link. Yeah, I've looked at various sites for their discography to figure out what I need to get, it'd just be nice to find a simpler list tbh, but it's not something I'd really expect anyone to have compiled since actual collectors will want all their CDs. I think I'm only missing one single though, so maybe it's less of an uphill struggle than I thought.

viragom, Well, take a look at their discography catalog at MusicBrainz, where all their CDs are listed: For example, some singles are "single only" ma cherie, Gardenia, Beast of Blood, Garnet etc.

Tetsu main is the only real answer to the Gackt vs Klaha argument tbh

v ALL their singles? Damn... it seemed to me that all the singles from Merveilles were just the single plus possibly intrumentals (I'm only talking about original songs and not instrumentals/variations of pre-existing songs when I say I want all their songs). If I have to buy everything then WHOOPS I'm gonna be so poor hahaha

viragom: Yes, you need to get all their albums + singles in order to get all their songs. Some are even live exclusive tracks.

I hope you guys are joking about era preferences.

I wish it were easier to figure out exactly which CDs you need to get all their songs. I've loved these guys for far too long to be discovering that so many of their CDs have exclusives that I'd assumed were elsewhere but... Welp, here I am.

I'm so glad to be part of Gackt's fandom. People are so lovely and friendly there <3
