Makating – Mr. Politician
Biography
Makating are a reggae band based in Oxford. They have been together for over 7 years and are now 10 members strong, including a 3 piece horn section. Well known for their live acts both locally and in similar scenes around the UK, Makating are a captivating group of performers.
The core band Makating (meaning something ‘powerful’) was formed from a week long studio session in December 1994. Surprised by the results, the band rehearsed as an eight piece and performed their first shows in March 1995 quickly building a strong local following. The sound evolved from a foundation of strong dub reggae drum and bass line to incorporate rich melodies and harmonies in the vocals, brass and guitar work. The live act has always been a rare outing in entertainment, never failing to get a crowd dancing.
The band went into the studio again in 1996 and recorded what were to be their debut releases. The first single “Peace In The Garden” reached no. 11 in the Echoes Roots and Culture chart and was played on Radio 1 by John Peel, and Kiss FM by Joey J. The single was also featured by the legendary Jah Shaka on his heavyweight sound. The two follow up singles, “Over the Hills” and “Mr. Politician” were released in 1997 and sold well through out London’s reggae shops. The final mixing and production of their debut album “Mackating” was done by Nick Mannasseh of Kiss FM and RIZ records.
