Biography

Maison Vague is a band from Essen, Germany. Building upon the early works of synthpop masters such as Gary Numan and Vince Clarke, Maison Vague adds a new twist to an old style. Employing vintage analog synthesizers alongside cutting edge digital technology, with witty and oftentimes ironical lyrics relevant to life in the 21st century, the songs of Maison Vague reflect an eclectic blend of influences, distilled and molded into synthpop form, resulting in a unique sound.

Its founder and only permanent member, Clark Stiefel, was born in 1962 in Atlanta, Georgia USA. Trained as a concert pianist, his musical endeavors encompass a wide range of genres from classical and avant-garde music to experimental jazz, music theater and electronica. In 1990, he relocated to Europe where he found many opportunities for experimentation and collaboration with other musicians, visual artists, dancers and choreographers. From 1996-2001, he toured with performance artist Meredith Monk whom he credits with reawakening his desire to sing and to explore a world where his own voice could flourish—the world of Maison Vague.

The origins of the band date back to the year 1999 when Clark, together with his brother, guitarist/composer Van Stiefel, formed an experimental improvised electronic music ensemble called Maison Vague. After recording an album together with cellist/composer Alex Catona (which was never released), and performing a well-received debut concert during the October Jazz Festival in Holland, the ensemble became dormant and eventually disbanded.
