not really a favorite---not a fan of the strings in general--do like the smaller string section in emerald but this orchestra is a bit much--

I love this album, too. Don't get me wrong, the original MO is where it's at, but this band was pretty rockin' in it's own right too. And I dig the orchestral stuff too. Overall a fine record.

Really mediocre. Seems like they did away with the elements of Mahavishnu Orchestra that really were interesting and neat on Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire, and Emerald Beyond, replacing it with cheesy orchestra. The violin solo on Hymn to Him is like a fresh reminder of what we're missing out on with this album. Slow and predictable, not very interesting.

Ech. I love the original MO, and Emerald Beyond has its moments, but this is the biggest load of cheesy old bollocks I've heard in a long time. Even when the tempo does get somewhere above Andante, the smooth sheen of the production robs the music of any life and excitement - it just sounds like very expensive wallpaper music.

I love this album. Critics still rag on it, but I think it's a great combination of classical music and jazz-rock-fusion.
