Machineri was formed in 2008 by Sannie Fox and Andre Geldenhuys.
Though Sannie was writing for and performing in two other bands at the time (Black Betty and Mama Know Nothing) a budding desire to form a new project was appearing as she found herself sitting with a list of new songs and the need for a guitarist to play on them.
Meanwhile Andre who had returned from working in Paris had left both of his two bands he was performing in (The Bastille and Riviera) and was practising his instrument all day in a dark room.
It so happened that fate (as it often does when it comes to band formations) played its musical hand in the creation of Machineri and the coincidence that Sannie was living three houses down the street sitting in a dark room all day writing new songs and waiting for a guitarist to pop up came to play a synchronous part in the union of the curious celtic blues operators Sannie and Andre!
Andre didn’t exactly pop up but he did appear one day sitting outside her house. The two musicians were some what aware of each other’s existence on the same street for having quietly watched from a distance the carrying of instruments into cars and the comings and goings of musical people in and out of both their living establishments. Apparently Andre had just bought a new strat and was wondering if this Sannie person wanted to come over and look at it. Since he knew she liked guitars, and since she knew she liked guitars she went on over.
They had an instant and bountiful musical connection and it became clear to Sannie that this was the guitarist for her new project. This Andre person played wicked guitar, ‘do you want to play in a band?’ she asked him and so the beginnings of Machineri came about, except they still didn’t know what to call their new project.
Between the smoking of cigarettes and the looking for misplaced plectrums they began to create a set whilst also discussing random things like Sannie’s amicability for ‘machine’s’ and Andre’s fond memories of his childhood imaginary friend Eri untill it dawned on them that afternoon that they had found the name of their band; Machineri
Together through some trial and error, a strange and traumatic jam with an electronic beat programmer and hours of rehearsing with an electronic loop kick which unfortunately gave them headaches and brought out anxiety attacks and paranoia Andre and Sannie decided to make a conscientious return to the agrarian man’s drum kit.
