Biography

Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland (1970 – present)

Moya Brennan, Máire Ní Bhraonáin, better known as Máire Brennan or Moya Brennan, is a Celtic folk singer. Born in Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland in 1952, she began her singing career when her family formed the band Clannad in 1970.

She is the elder sister of the singer Enya, who was also briefly a member of Clannad in the early 1980s.

Her music is usually classified as New Age or Celtic. She accepts the Celtic label, but has at times indicated a slight discomfort with being seen as “New Age” as much of her music is strongly Christian, with some of her songs showing additional influences from her Catholic upbringing.

Since 2002, she has promoted herself as Moya Brennan — a spelling closely resembling the phonetic pronunciation of her name for those not familiar with the Irish variant of the spelling.

According to her official website, her early influences included the likes of Joni Mitchell and The Beach Boys, before she discovered “the extraordinary wealth of Celtic history and melody on her doorstep”.

Moya is also a member of Irish vocal supergroup T with the Ms.

Signature, as far as I know is Máire's lastest released work. Whilst not Clannad, there is a fine band of players who worked with her in the creation process. This album is well worth a purchase, if you can find a copy.

In the beginning of her career, Moya used Máire Brennan as her artist name. Later on she used Moya Brennan as her artist name, because she thought that this would be better understandable for people around the world... But her real name is Máire Ni Bhroanáin (or something like this...), to make it more complicated... ;) By the way, the official Moya website is www.moyabrennan.com, so I think Moya should be the main artist name...
