Jacksonville, Florida (1964 – 1977)

Lynyrd Skynyrd (IPA: /ˌlɛnɚdˈskɪnɝd/) (leh-nerd skin-nerd) is an iconic U.S. band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964. The band reached prominence during the 19 under the leadership of vocalist and primary songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, until he died, along with several other members of the band (Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines and assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick), in a plane crash on Oct. 20th, 1977 in a Gillsburg, Mississippi swamp. Their album, named “Street Survivors,” released just 3 days before the crash, showed them standing in flames. This album cover version was quickly pulled from store shelves and replaced with the cover minus the flames in respect of of those who had passed in the crash.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was formed as a band in 1964 and had taken on several name changes before settling on Lynyrd Skynyrd. Originally known as “The Backyard Boys” when they first formed, Skynyrd changed their name from “The Backyard Boys,” to “The One Percent,” (both with the first four founding members - Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Larry Jundstrom, Bob Burns), to “The Noble Five” (when Allen Collins was recruited by Ronnie Van Zant), to “Lynard Skynard.” The band changed their name to Lynard Skynard initally to make fun of the local high school PE teacher Leonard Skinner who would often kick out and suspend Gary Rossington and Ronnie Van Zant for having long hair (past their ears). Eventually, to honor the 60’s band the Byrd’s, Skynyrd replaced the “a” ‘s in their name to all “y” ‘s.

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s biggest influences were: The Beatles, Charlie Daniels Band, Merle Haggard, J.J. Cale, Cream, Robert Johnson, The Allman Brothers, and B.B. King
