2) Melodic. Chaotic. Desolate. Euphoric. Light.
Le son qui appelle à nous tous.
Lumiere was originally formed as a creative side project to bassist Alex Burnett and drummer Joel van Gastel’s now defunct band City Calm Down. Lumiere kicked off in late 2006 without a name and with only a few tunes. The young band of only 15, 16, and 17 years old quickly began playing local gigs around the Illawarra. As the band’s sound progressed, so did their musical professionalism, and in late 2007, under the name Lumiere, they entered their first competition at the Illawarra Mercury Bluescope Band Competition. Their developed and original sound came as a welcome addition to the Wollongong music scene, and within their first year as such a young band, their musical skill earned them fourth place in the grand final of the competition, which was held at WIN Entertainment Centre.
With an ever-expanding local following and musical horizon, Lumiere continued to perform shows throughout the Illawarra, and in late 2007/early 2008, they took out first prize in the Arncliffe ACES Band Competition. By now, their fan base had spread to Sydney and beyond.
In mid 2008, and with a repertoire containing a diverse range of music, Lumiere confidently reentered the Illawarra Mercury Bluescope Band Competition and took out first prize, earning them a recording package of seven days at Wollongong’s 313 Studios under Aria award-winning Al Wright’s experienced studio hand, and a $5000 cash prize, which then in turn led to the band being able to professionally produce their debut album The Dreamscape.
Earlier this year, bassist Alex Burnett sadly took his temporary (and yet what feels so lengthy) leave from Lumiere to travel to Europe. Thankfully, the band’s music continued to evolve from here forth with the introduction of Brad Summers.
Today, Lumiere continues to play numerous gigs to what have now become packed-out venues all around the Illawarra.
Lumiere have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with many talented and well-established bands such as The Dawn Collective, Mirrorsessions, Inanimate Objects, Lost In Line, Crash Tragic, The Jacket, Bryce Jacobs, Sleepmakeswaves and others.
