Luciano Cilio

Biography

Born in Naples in 1950, Luciano quickly developed a surprising interest in long sustained sounds. Thus focusing his research on the sound in it’s primary and internal meaning. At the outset on the melodic, rhythmic and harmonic entities. To “re-enter in the sound. to hold it. to hold it… then to leave it to go”. In his lifetime he only released one album, ‘Dialoghi del presente’, in 1977.

It was not particularly successful at the time of release, but after a 2004 re-release on CD and talk of it spreading through online music communities, it soon became regarded highly amongst fans of modern classical and avant-garde music.

Although his musical career was relatively short lived, Luciano was involved in many important artistic events held in Naples until his death by suicide in 1983

I'm just getting into his music, after finding him by idly searching "combination of This Heat and Nick Drake," who are two of my favorite artists (also two artists whose musical styles I felt were relatively incompatible). I have to agree with Jim O'Rourke, this feels a lot like what combination of the This Heat s/t and Pink Moon would sound like. Not to pigeonhole it, though. No music is really just _____ mixed with _____. That's not the way music works. Brilliant stuff.

Baudelaire said: "The violin sobs like an afflicted heart..." True words, apllicable to the beautiful strains of this man's muse.

Sorry, but Luciano Cilio released only one official album in 1977 - "Dialoghi Del Presente", which was re-released in 2004 with bonuses under name "Dell'Universo Assente".

It's like being haunted by Beauty itself. That's what love and Cilio's music have in common to me.

From The Wire :"Originally released under the name Dialoghi Del Presente in 1979, Dell'Universo Assente (The Absent Universe) is a posthumous release with extra tracks from Neapolitan composer Luciano Cilio, who committed suicide in 1983 at the age of 33. As Jim O'Rourke says in the sleevenotes: "... you can feel in the music a sort of necessity that can be rarely found... this enormous weight that is bearing on its creators, the absolute need to exorcise it from their lives. This does not mean that it is necessarily an outpouring of angst or bereavement, but a moment in time where you are invited to hear artists truly in contact with their existence."
