I just realized the bass line is fucking great. Apart from the whole orchestral arrangement, the songwriting and Reeds vocals of course.

I love the contrast of the happy-go-lucky strings and frisky beat with Lou's angry lyric and the driving insinuation of jack Bruce's bass guitar. Terrific song, and ying to the yang of Caroline Says II

The two Caroline Says songs are one perfect self-contained expression of a love, within Berlin, which is another.

Berlin is the most depressing album I have ever heard, yet I cannot stop listening to it after 30 years. Just keep sharp instruments, drugs or guns away from me!!

Berlin is undoubtedly Reed's masterpiece. Not an easy listen mind you--just the opposite. Reed says that he set out to create the most depressing album of all time with Berlin, and it's a contender for sure. But if it were just depressing who would care? It happens to be his most brilliant album without doubt--make sure to check out the Berlin tour from the summer of 08 when Reed played the album from beginning to end in order around the world. Amazing shows!!! Also, Antony of Antony and the Johnsons sings on many of the songs, and back up on most of them.

Berlin is lyrically Lou Reed's best work. Not bad-sounding either mind you.
