A local quartet has recently been haunting the cafes and basements of Dekalb as well as the greater Midwest area with their musical approach that can only be referred to as a “wall of sound.” I recently got a chance to converse with these young men, and while their lyric-less music may leave much to the imagination, this specific encounter did not. I entered the room only to be greeted with my last name being shouted at me in a shrill and insulting tone by all members as opposed to a polite nod and a handshake. It was immediately clear that all of these gentleman were not representative of the typical socio-economic status of their hometown, St. Charles, Illinois. Rather, they seemed to flaunt their unintelligence and continued their conversation by constantly referring to their genitals as well as repeating the phrase, “beefing,” which I can only conclude was a crude reference to flatulence.
Despite this mindless banter being spewed forth by these young men, they did communicate one sentiment that I feel best encapsulates the general demeanor of the band. The said demeanor consists entirely of a narcissistic and extremely pretentious tone. Whilst this may sound harsh, it is by no means an exaggeration. This point was driven home by their gratuitous song names that they assured me had no actual meaning in attachment to the music. Through this one brief encounter
