The humble beginnings of Tallahassee indie rock outfit Look Mexico can be traced to a chance meeting between Matt Agrella (vocals/guitar) and Dave Bumsted (guitar) at a Sea and Cake show held at Florida State University. They started writing songs, and in early 2004 decided to really get a band up and running together. Searching for members to round them out, they eventually hooked up with drummer Josh Mikel; Look Mexico booked their first show in October 2004 (playing with Karate, no less), even though they had yet to find a bassist. A temporary one was found just in time for the gig, but Look Mexico weren’t solidified until after the recording of their first EP, 2005’s So Byzantine, with the addition of Tyson Kuhlhoff.

The guys played various dates, mostly around Florida, before entering the studio in early 2006 to record their next effort. The Crucial EP was released later that year to positive response, and following its recording, Bumsted left to pursue school and was replaced on guitar by Ryan Slate. Over time, the band shared stages with acts like Horse the Band, Piebald, Gogogo Airheart, Fake Problems, and more. Look Mexico signed to Lujo Records in late 2006 and readied their debut full-length, This is Animal Music, which appeared the following summer. The band supported it on the road for the remainder of the year.

To Bed To Battle was written and recorded this past summer in Look Mexico’s former hometown of Tallahassee, FL.

Epic live show in Oslo! Comin' in hot with a side of bacon was the big surprise for me. And what a bunch of nice guys, seriously. Very nice, down to earth and just plain awesome. Very friendly, and very good live! I'm happy for anyone that has the privilege to have such a great night with these guys. Look Mexico = The real deal.

I find myself feeling this is a cool development. Track 1.. "Hey! If you never tried it, how would you ever have known? Look! This is your life, you're on your own." Listen to the instrumental part after that line. Remind you of a certain style? It's not only some fresh update of their early sound, it's amazingly GOOD! Track 1 is a great song. I don't like track 2, but it's not unusual to not like every single song. I don't even like some of my own songs. Track 3 reminds me of Foo Fighters mixed with Minus The Bear, which would do great during summer season. It's easy listening. Track 4 - Simply wonderful. Track 5 is goodie-good! The beginning reminds me of Alkaline Trio, and I'm not a fan of Alkaline Trio. But I'm a fan of Look Mexico, so it'll pass. :-) At first, the chorus part is like Beach Boys.. And hold on, this is so cool. It just slides into a short Ghosts and Vodka session with vocals. Underneath each song, the sound is still there. Because in the end, it's all Look Mexico.

How can anything Look Mexico not sound Look Mexico? It doesn't add up. Like most of us, they change as well. I love "This is animal music." It has great meaning to me - but you know, whatever works for them, let them have it. It feels like the fourth song is a treat for us "animalians." Like a "we have not forgotten you, but we're moving on to steady ground"-kind-of-song. I choose to interpret it as such, it makes me smile. And that's all I need for now.

I don't even like this is animal music that much, I prefer To Bed To Battle. And honestly, I feel like the songs just aren't that good. If any other band had released them, I probably wouldn't listen to them.
