The band began in the early 90’s as Little Guilt Shrine and split in 1998.
The foundations were lain with an ex-Goth/Star Wars geek guy named Matt Holland writing a bunch of songs and playing with samplers and banging on steel pipes in a warehouse in Sacramento, CA. He was soon joined by his spazzy brother Britton Holland on drums, and then met this nutburger-eatin alien kung fu tall guy named Dana Gumbiner who played bass, sang, and co-wrote songs. LGS soon stood for a neverending variety of names such as Lime Grass Snakes, Liquid Girl Scouts, and Large Green Stationwagon.

With a strong DIY attitude and grassroots approach they grew a loyal west coast fanbase, sold 10,000 albums independently (and about as many tee shirts, dinosaur toys, frisbees, and lunch boxes at their lively shows), and received some moderate Northern California radio airplay of their fourth album “New Car Smell”. Between 1992 and 1998 they recorded, produced, and released 5 albums: Ducktape, Mean People Suck, Purr, Tiny Kitten, New Car Smell, and Boy Girl Boy.

LGS played live shows up and down the west coast, and on a national tour with fellow Sacramento band, Cake. They shared the stage with the likes of Weezer, Far, Sublime, Sugar Ray, Jesus Jones, Deftones… and on one wacky afternoon, Jewel. Their music styles ran from psychadelic trip out grunge rock and mosh pit raprock, to polka versions of the GoGos and pop songs for well-dressed dorks.

This was one of the best bands Sacramento offered when I a teen!!! I still have my autographed "New Car Smell"cd. Britton was the greatest guy I know, and the Sun Flower was best when Matt owned it. Makes me miss home.

Along with Tiger Trap, LGS was my favorite hometown band. They were amazing live and totally underrated. Dana and Matt wrote such fantastically witty, nerdy songs. absolutelywilde shouted
