About this album

Listen Lisse (2009) Released: 17 Jun 2009 10 tracks (64:24)
This debut album from Listen Lisse has 10 tracks most of which go past the 5 minute mark. The album was released on June 5th 2007.

This is a solo album released independently and which is recorded by the artist (Lisa McKendrick) on a home PC which would often crash which the artist sees as a factor that contributed to the instability that can be heard in the voice which she sees as a positive thing and as part of the process of the creation of the album. The artist thought it necessary to record the vocals where possible in one take so that it wouldn’t disrupt the telling of the story as having a beginning, middle and an end.

Most of the album was recorded during a 5-day recording session during which the artist did not leave the house in summer 2006. The rest of the album was recorded in and around Hackney, London, at various locations. The songs are mixed by Gary Sansom who also added electronic drum beats to Devils Gaze and Fabricate.

Lisa recorded and mixed a video for the song Judas which was recorded entirely on a digital camera, the low quality of the image being relevant to the rawness that can be heard in the vocals and instruments of the song. The video is a compilation of the artist’s drawings and images of the location of the house and room in which she was living at the time. The approach taken when making the video was one that aimed at capturing ideas of the cross over into areas of the “divine” when caught up in the experience of making music and also Jungian theories of the self, the shadow, animus, and changes in attitude.
