The Lightbox Orchestra is an ever-changing large ensemble led by Fred Lonberg-Holm that improvises freely under the limitations of the 'lightbox'. Lonberg-Holm (or in some cases one of his band members) controls a not-terribly-sophisticated apparatus with colored bulbs that light up and sometimes a collection of large cue cards that give directions to the many improvising musicians.
According to the Locust Music website: "On a 'typical' evening of Lightbox fare, Lonberg-Holm and roughly a dozen different players enter the performance space in the spirit of a true sound lab experiment with no pre-composed harmonic or melodic material. Each player is assigned a light. Fred sits before his box of colored lights and toys with his lightbox and a stack of graphical & emphatic cue cards , inviting participants when to play and when not to play - sometimes producing gloriously melodious minisuites, at others, pitting the members of his musical fiefdom against one another as only a true trickster would to oddly truncated effect."
