Rarely one to sucumb to formulaic musical styles, Ash Bowie has created an album that is as diverse as it is experimental. Most of the tracks were recorded in Chapel Hill and in his mom’s basement in North Carolina. The most intense recording periods were 1993 and 1999/2000, although three of the songs were recorded during Helium’s Dirt of Luck sessions in 1994. Armed with a piano and effects devices, Ash was able to record some non-guitar instrumentation during this time.
In 1999, Ash enlisted the help of fellow Bostonian and producer Eric Masunaga (Sebadoh, Dambuilders, Push Kings, Magnetic Fields) for additional tweaking and knob-turning. The result is an album full of Ash’s signature Polvoisms…off-time, distorted jams, cool-as-ice vocals, and detailed song-structures. As a finished unit, it is very difficult to pinpoint the right genre or sound that Libraness fits into. Then again, that’s what made Polvo so special.
