I was born on this mountain a long time ago
Before they knocked down the timber and strip-mined the coal
When you rose in the mornin' before it was light
To go down in that dark hole and come back up at night

I saw Steve Earle and Levon Helm at the same festival and they both played this. Great seeing the writer of the song and the interpreter doing their own great renditions.

YES,TO THE MINE WORKERS,but like any real mans work comes many risks my friend.I am a towboater on americas working rivers and we have guys lose their lives all the time.....boats sink, lock lines and wires break severing arms legs and torsos[robbing good men of their lives regularly]but its the life we chose on the water but i wouldnt trade it for anything.

His voice isn't as strong as in the good old days, but he still makes me think of the best days of The Band

A Steve Earle song covered by The Band. Well, not quite, but almost as good.
