The rain falls down on last year's man
That's a Jew's harp on the table that's a crayon in his hand
And the corners of the blueprint are ruined since they rolled
Far past the stems of thumbtacks that still throw shadows on the wood

Fantastic lump-in-throat song. Both beautiful and haunting.

I also like the strings and chorus (although the former more so than the latter.) They are introduced & built up very subtly, so they give the whole song a "progression" and climax without being super obvious and explicit.

The strings and the choir just plain work. Completely understated and perfectly placed. Not overpowering unlike the production on his later work.

Cohen apparently had a big disagreement with the producer of this album, who was insisting on adding the strings and choir, while Cohen wanted it to just be spare, his voice and guitar. Always felt those were out of place... great song nevertheless.

and we read from pleasant bibles that are bound in blood and skin, that the wilderness is gathering all its children back again..

Once I loved his voice with the girls' voices in the background. Now I would like to hear his pure voice without the angel choire. Maybe, in "Partisan" I can still accept it as it is!
