Oi Da Ne Vecher (7:19)

Cover of Oi Da Ne Vecher

From Oi Da Ne Vecher

This is Lena Selyanina’s modern take on the old Russian cossack song Oi Da Ne Vecher, conveying a mystical story of a cossack who sees a dream possibly predicting his own death due to the approaching ‘eastern winds’. Lena is playing all keyboards and singing up to five different voices, some of them doubled and tripled, in her own choral arrangement.

Guileless and fathomless, iconic and hypnotic... genius loci, evocative of endless plains, the dignity of the poeple, the grave ecstacy of the holy fool who walks on the water unaware of the line between the ordinary and the miraculous. To borrow from another monastic tradition: before Enlightenment, chop wood, draw water -- after Enlightenment, chopwood, draw water. I can see this piece, in just this form, as an opening or (especially) closing film credit, in a movie not yet made but which I want to see! Unforced, unhurried, unadorned, anthemic...
