Laura Veirs is an American . She grew up in Colorado, where she often spent summers camping with her family, which gave her much of her song-writing inspiration. She recently transplanted to Portland, Oregon from Seattle, Washington.

Veirs has said that she didn’t seriously listen to music until she was in her 20s; instead, she just heard what was in her environment. She listened to folk, country, classical and pop music around the house and on the radio during her youth.

Attending Carleton College in rural Minnesota, Veirs latched onto feminist punk rock from the Pacific Northwest, eventually starting an all-female punk band called “Rair Kx!”. Laura studied geology and Mandarin Chinese. After college, she embraced older country and folk music. Her first foray into songwriting started with a geological expedition in China, where she served as translator. She was miserable and immersed herself into writing lyrics as a way of coping.

She put out her own self-titled album Laura Veirs, recorded live and featuring just her and guitar, in 1999. She has since made five highly acclaimed records with producer Tucker Martine. 2003 saw the release of Troubled by the Fire, a full-band effort that found the artist sharing the studio with such luminaries as Bill Frisell and violist Eyvind Kang. She signed to Nonesuch Records the following year with the atmospheric follow-up Carbon Glacier. Year of Meteors followed in August of 2005. She collaborated with The Decemberists on “Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then)”, from their 2006 album The Crane Wife.

(2 of 2) Want a taste of Laura's "Saltbreakers" era?? Check out "Summer Is The Champion",, and you'll walk away wanting more! Prefer the sparse, stripped down sound present in "Carbon Glacier"?? Well, check out "Silo Song"........Craving a track that embodies "Year Of Meteors" -like Veirs?? "I Can See Your Tracks" will make you happy! Are you like me, and especially are drawn to the reflective but positive "Troubled by the Fire"?? "Wide-Eyed, Legless" it up, my friend! This is not to suggest that Laura's cd is merely a mix of her previous strengths, with new song titles.....it is so much more than that! Flame finds a way to push her musical envelope forward in creative, innovative, self-challenging ways, while simultaneously appealing to her established loyal fanbase, by drawing upon her previous LPs to lure both the new and the old fans in here:)

The new album is one of her best, in a career full of highlights! 2003's Troubled by the Fire is my favourite album of the just-wrapping-up decade.....July Flame starts off the next decade of music in the finest way possible!! There is no doubt in my mind, that come 2019, it will be up there with my fav albums of the decade once again:) From the sweet, optimistic, sparseness of "Life Is Good Blues", to the sparkling upbeat "Summer Is The Champion" that is surely influenced by "Belle and Sebastian", to the lyrical simplicity, but powerfulness of the title track "July Flame", to my personal favourite and career high point to date- "Sun Is King", Veirs' 7th LP , despite my deep passion and personal soft spot for ":Troubled by the Fire", "July Flame" is her most diverse, eclectic, moving artistic statement to date, in a career full of highlights! The album's greatest strength is its ability to draw upon her historically displayed strongpoints, and put them together in a fulfilling way!

New album is astonishingly beautiful. Totally influenced by what Fleet Foxes did with their debut, but wonderful nonetheless.

New album sounds good - I might like it more than Year of Meteors. It's more upbeat, at least.

I saw her open for Tegan and Sara three weeks ago. I hadn't heard any of her stuff before so I got Year of Meteors, which I really enjoy. I wasn't too keen of her live performance the first night, however I really enjoyed it the second night. It was more like an acoustic set.

Voice is not the best, but hey, I can't sing either. Love her songs though. Hope she has a Dutch gig too on her new tour :)

I wouldn't call it horrible. She reminds me of Dylan, I guess. He was never that technically proficient either, I guess, but there's definitely something about his voice that makes it more 'listenable' than just any random person, IMO.

Her voice is horrible, nothing special at all - like listening to a friend with no real talent singing, but I LOVE the music anyway. I'm not sure why, but I really do. One of my favorite bands hands down.

Haven't seen her live, but with the exception of a lot of the Carbon Glacier album, completely disagree about the songs

Saw her open for the Decemberists, was not impressed. Her voice isn't that great, she yells more than sings. Her songs are all marginal, very generic indie stuff. One started out kind of intriguing, but then was ruined by about a minute of syllables instead of lyrics.
