Biography

La Bouche was a Eurodance duo formed by Frank Farian in Germany in 1994, consisting of Melanie Thornton (May 13, 1967 - November 24, 2001) and Lane McCray. The first lead single, “Be My Lover” was top 10 in fourteen countries, #1 in Germany and #6 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1996. It went on to win the ASCAP award for the “Most Played Song in America”. Their first album, entitled Sweet Dreams, went five times Platinum and nine times Gold worldwide. The second and final album, S.O.S. also known as A Moment of Love was released in 1998, featuring the single “You Won’t Forget Me”.

Melanie Thornton Going Solo

In 2000, Melanie Thornton left the group to pursue a solo career. She was replaced by Natascha Wright and a single was released entitled “All I Want” in April of the same year. Poor sales resulted, and Farian decided to put the group to rest. Meanwhile, Melanie Thornton was achieving momentous popularity with a single called “Wonderful Dream”. The song was quickly chosen by Coca Cola as the theme song for a Christmas Commercial.

While promoting the upcoming release of her new album Ready To Fly, Thornton was killed in a plane crash near Zurich, November 24th 2001. Thornton’s album sold remarkably well, even though it was released after her death. In April 2002, Farian compiled songs from Thornton’s debut album of the year prior along with selections from the first and second La Bouche albums into a best of collection entitled The Best of La Bouche [feat. Melanie Thornton].
