L'Amour La Morgue

(2008 – present)

L’Amour La Morgue (L.A.L.M.) is the newest DJ sensation to hit the dance scene. Borrowing heavily from the sounds of dry ice and science fiction, LALM is essentially whatever you thought you liked, made better.

Drawing from his own background in songwriting and production, with multi-platinum and gold records under his belt, L.A.L.M. saw DJing as a chance to explore and conquer something different, something unknown. And so what began in 2008 as an experiment with other artists’ songs (“I wanted to be able to play stuff like Kings of Leon at clubs without inflicting pain. … on myself”) has morphed into a full-fledged aural assault, with an album of original material due in 2010. Most of L.A.L.M.’s early work has involved messing around with keyboards and laptops in various hotel rooms across the globe, a haphazard approach that lent itself perfectly to the dirty pulse of his songs.

Remixes of the Killers’ “Spaceman,” “I Dread the Night” by Gallows, “Death” by White Lies, the Magic Wands’ “Black Magic,” and “Weight of the World” by Young Guns (among numerous others - including surprising takes on artists like Britney, Beyonce and Nine Inch Nails), have solidified LALM as the leader of the dark side of dance movement. A recent project, a tripped out version of Editors’ single “Papillon” (released exclusively through NME) is a tour de force of electronica - cascading swirls of synthesized sounds cocooned around Tom Smith’s majestically haunting vocals.

L.A.L.M. has DJed in Rio, Ibiza, NYC, all over the UK and has had remixes constantly feature in the dance charts. A monumental gig in Tel Aviv was cancelled when his proposed act was deemed too controversial for the country.

Was unfortunate enough to hear them play at matter in London over the weekend - without a question the worst set I have ever heard in my last 15 years of club going..... Noisy, soul-less 'electro' cheese made by people with no idea or clue how club music works. Not only was I embarrassed for them with their silly face scarves, but also the team who booked them.... The minute they came on, the atmosphere (and about 400 people) left the dancefloor. The promoter's face was a picture. They killed the night! I'd stick to making angry rock music for depressed teenagers if I was them....

Remix of It Was Written In Blood on BMTH's Cut Up cd is by far the best track on the album.
